ALL SORTS OF REVIEWS BOOK - FUGITIVE PIECES - Anne Michaels (June 03, 2008)
I picked this up from the church porch book sale, and it had no blurb on the back to tell you what it was all about - so I came to it totally unprepared.
This book is not so much of a story as a description of changing times. It's hard to know where to start - but don't expect this book to tell you a story, as in - this happens and then - something else happens, etc. It doesn't work like that.
Anne Michaels is a poet with 2 published poetry books already - and that's the clue. This book is a poem in novel form. It doesn't tell a story - it describes an atmosphere, and leaves you to fill in the blanks. It covers 3 generations, from a lost war orphan to now, but it doesn't count time.
It's more of an experience in words. The text carves an impression - creates a scene - fills in the background - then skips about - backward and forward - and you have to keep up. I have to admit - I got lost - more than once. But it doesn't matter - let the words carry you on, the scene you are in is painted so vividly - that's where you are - right now - here - nothing else matters. The background story catches up with you eventually.
I love this book - it doesn't 'do' - it just 'is', read it, return to it, loose yourself in it - and come back again and again and again. I know I will.
