Crafter's Corner paper sizes (November 07, 2007)
The great mystery of paper sizes and codes explained!!
The biggest size of paper that you can get is A0 - it is used for posters. If you fold an A0 sheet in half you get A1 - if you fold A1 sheet in half you get A2 - if you fold an A2 sheet in half you get A3 . . . . .and so on down (right on down past A8 (playing card) to A10 - which is tiny!). Each smaller paper size is the bigger one folded in half! That is all it is.
Are you all keeping up????
The size most people will buy to make cards is the A4, which is then folded in half to make an A5 card - If you cut an A4 in half you get 2 x A5 - which folded in half gives you A6 size cards.
To make life simpler(?) manufacturers have decided to prefix envelopes to fit the A size card with the letter C - sooo an A4 sheet of card, folded in half makes an A5 size card which goes in a C5 envelope. An A5 sheet of card, folded in half marked an A6 card which goes in a C6 envelope.
The 'hot' new size that seems to be throwing every one is
the DL. It is an office size - you know when you get a letter in a long thin envelope - that;s the DL. It is an A4 folded into 3 - the matching envelope is . . . . .DL. That's it - it is that simple.
Below is diagram of the A sizes and a proper size list
A4 210mm x 297mm
A5 148mm x 210mm
A6 105mm x 148mm
(see how the shorter side becomes the longer side?)
DL 110mm x 220mm
There is also a B size - don't go there - in all my years of working with paper i have NEVER had to use it. It does not match up to A and C and is really not worth thinking about for most crafters.
PLEASE make sure that when you buy ready made card stock - that you have envelops to fit! If you get all the odd sizes your options are severely limited if you haven't bought the envelops at the same time - and believe me - SIZE MATTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!
