Design and 'how to' pages I.A.M.P.E.T.H. paper 'finishes' (November 19, 2007)
When you buy art paper, as well as the weight - the pack will give you the 'finish' of the paper.
HOT - This means that the paper has been pressed through hot cylinders to make the surface smooth. Sort of like ironing it!
NOT - The paper comes directly off the drying roller to be cut - it has a gently 'ruffled' surface because it has not been pressed (get it?)
ROUGH - A heavily textured paper surface produced by placing wet sheets of paper against textured blankets or air drying (or both).
You will also come across
- HANDMADE - Paper made by hand using a mould (a frame covered with a flat, rigid screen or flexible screen). The finish of this paper tends to be fairly thick, but 'fluffy'. The fibres are quite loosely packed because it has not been run through any rollers and it does not take kindly to folding. Also it tends to be too porous to paint on, always test a corner to check.
