A GUIDE TO INK TYPES (April 19, 2008)
DYE INKS
Dye inks are water based, non-toxic, wash out easily and mostly child safe. They are transparent, and will blend easily and dry quickly on most matt ans glossy papers, but will run if they become wet again. Dye inks do fade and have limited archival quality.
PIGMENT INKS
Pigment inks are oil based, acid free, non-toxic, fade resistant and more opaque than dye inks. Pigments are not easily washed out of clothing. These inks will not dry on glossy paper without using embossing powder and heating. Once embossed they become permanent and can be used for watercolour techniques. Their slow drying property makes them ideal for embossing.
CRAFT INKS
Craft inks are acrylic based, acid free, non-solvent based, non-toxic and water soluble until completely dry or heat set. Once dry you can watercolour over them. You can use them on fabrics, wood, paper mache, leather, foam.
PERMANENT INKS
Permanent inks can be either water soluble or solvent based. The water soluble ink can be used on all papers and other surfaces (walls, wood, terracotta, heavy / textured / glossy paper, ceramics, glass, shrink plastic, acetate. Permanent ink dries fast so you can colour images immediately. They don't run, bleed, or fade.
