Crafter's Corner QUICK BRAYER BACKGROUND (October 07, 2009)
I love working with a brayer but some people just don't know how to start off. Here is a really quick textured background method. Do it in blues for the sky - greens for the grass - browns for the - you get the idea.
You will need:-
- a brayer
- coloured ink - I am using a Kaleidacolor Blue Breeze, but you can use any pad/s
- backing paper - I use a heavy rough water colour paper because it adds so much more texture
Next - ink up your roller - Gently roll the roller across the pad. You must be careful to keep the ink colour stripes going round the roller in their own colour line. If you try to roll different colours over each other at this stage you will contaminate your pad.
Gently - with the roller just touching the paper - roll the brayer over the paper in ONE direction moving the brayer from right to left only. When you have a rough coating you can go back over it to mix the ink on the paper. Now you can roll left to right and back keeping the brayer on the paper - and pressing quite hard. You will need to act fairly quickly while the ink is still wet. Don't be precise and don't worry about the ink mixing in other areas - It's supposed too. If you have 'empty' looking area you can go back and pick up a little more ink and fill in where you want to.
finished background.
You can see it's still quite patchy - I wanted a rough sky look.
This is the same technique with the same ink pad, but with a much more dense coating. There are also a couple of other things going on here - will cover that in a later post.
