Crafter's Corner HARD BACK BOOK (October 19, 2009)
OK - I am going to try to show you how to make a simple hard back book. Once you have mastered the general idea these are really useful for a project book - I use one for my Copic reference book and it's dead easy to add extra pages.
We will start with an A5 book so you get the hang of it - then you can make any size you like.
You will need
- scrap heavish card/book board for the book base
- 2 x double sided 12" paper (really good quality because you will make the hinge with this), to cover the book with
- ribbon
- double sided tape
- scrapbook pegs
1. From your base card you need to cut
2 x 44cm x 44cm - for the front/back covers
2 x 44cm x 44cm - for the front/back spines
2. You are going to cover the spine and the first part of the cover AND make the hinge so the pages will open, with the first of your papers.
You will need to leave a good 2cm to fold over at the top and bottom of the book AND leave enough on the spine side to cover back along into the cover.
Put a line of double sided tape on the edge of the paper - the edge of the cover - and both sides of the spine. overlap the cover with the paper about 10cms and stick it down. Leave a 1cm gap and set the spine down. The gap is your hinge
3. Then fold you paper over the spine - over the gap - lap in onto the cover. Secure with a strip of double sided tape an both sides of the spine - on the edge of the cover and on the edge of the paper.
4. Trim along the top of the wrapped paper and a tiny sliver down the top so you can fold the top paper over neatly. Secure with double sided tape
You can see in the above picture how the paper wraps round the 2 pieces of card to make the hinge. Make the bottom fold the same way. Then do the same thing with your other 2 pieces of card. Can you see that now you have a front and a back - with a flexible joint?
5. Now you are going to cover the outsides of the book. Put double sided tape on the edge of the first paper - top - bottom - and side of the cover and stick your cover paper on.
You will need a good 2cm to over lap on the 3 uncovered sides of the cover.
REMEMBER if the paper is patterned - you need to check which way the pattern is going in relation to the spine.
fold over the paper to cover the edges - short end first - then trim the top and bottom to match your first corners.
6. This is the front cover of my book. I have put a length of ribbon from the inside
7. cut a piece to cover the inner on the board using the reverse of one of the papers.
8. Now - on the narrow strip of covered card you need to drill 2 holes to take your scrapbook pegs
9. Then to assemble your book. you will need to cut some pegs to fit inside and just Screw the scrapbook
10. Add a length of ribbon to cover up the join and add your book title
