Essays & General Comments 08-02-08 The NEW Office (February 29, 2008)
We must chart the progress of the new office! My tiny desk top has driven me mad for ages - then the old goat had a brain wave.
BEFORE
Do you see my tiny desk by the window? And all the over flowing bookcase shelves next to it - he reckoned if we pulled out the book case, we could build a high table (I have a high chair - and I like to see out the window), with book shelves under it and extra small 'handy' shelves over it.
I have gradually replaced the rest of the office stuff with better quality wood units, but this was the last of the old cheap Argos ones. Well I am not going to turn that kind of offer down am I? I emptied the book case - - - - - - and we started.
STAGE TWO
The bare bones starting to take shape.
The desk top is in and the bottom shelf is put high enough to let me put my big binders under it.
THE FINISH
Still got a bit to do - house is covered is sawdust and bits! I am soo thrilled with it all - clever old goat. I have finally got a space for all those big heavy binders that are such a pane to store - all lined up on the floor. I have waxed all the wood apart from the desk tops which are varnished so I don't mark them with ink. I am gradually sorting through the heaps of stuff I took off. I have tried to be really ruthless as to whether I will 'use it or loose it', but I have had to part with very little 'useless'. There is even a bit of extra space!
In this side unit (which is a DVD rack with extra shelves added) are all my tiny bottles of ink. I just KNEW all the Chinese take-away pots would have a use one day!
I have had a good juggle about on my bigger shelves (I MUST sell some books), and I have another DVD rack for odd little bits and bobs.
THE SHOP STORAGE
I had all these 'stacking' storage boxes - that did not really stack and spent most of the time falling over and creasing the stuff underneath. Well, OK, I have had them for years and they have been used for all sorts of stuff from Princelet's toys to jam jars and kitchen stuff, gardening, and on to my shop stuff. But it still falls over S O - - - this is 2
of Argo's drawer units fitted together to make a 6 drawer unit (you don't have to put on the top of the unit - you can carry on up and put the top on when you have finished). All I have to do is take out the whole drawer, and put them in the car. The bottom one has A5, the next DL, then albums, small cards, room to grow, office accounts and on the top is a big box with all the toppers, and bits and bobs. How neat is that? It used to spread all over the place, and now if I need more space - all I have to do is buy another unit - take off the top - and build on up. PS - This is the attic staircase - it goes all the way up to the roof!
Job done!
