Fibromyalgia - Guaifenesin treatment
A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THE GUAIFENESIN PROTOCOL FROM PETER - PART OF THE LEADERS TEAM FOR THE SUPPORT GROUP
The first thing to know about the Guaifenesin Protocol is that it works. As it stands at the moment, it's the culmination of more than forty years of clinical development by Dr R. Paul St. Amand and his team. Both Dr St. Amand and his co-author, Claudia Craig Marek, are Fibromyalgia sufferers and have fully reversed their symptoms, as have members of their families and many of their patients. Because the protocol has been practised for so many years, it's also developed as it's gone along and will continue to do so as knowledge of the illness increases and the practicalities of treatment evolve.
Dr St. Amand has suggested causes for Fibromyalgia, based on his expertise in the fields of endocrinology and physiology and there are very good reasons, and some considerable evidence, that his theories are very close to the mark, if not exactly on it. However, he is a practising physician and not a research scientist and has always said that he welcomes any effort to test his theories using formal scientific methods. In the meantime, it is possible to show that patients can recover from their symptoms by following the protocol. Results are measurable, through mapping and by physical changes in patients, and repeatable, by different patients using the same methods as outlined in the protocol. In Dr St. Amand's clinic, following well over 10 000 patients, success rates are in the high nineties percentage, though, in the final analysis, it is only the patient themselves who can ensure that they follow the protocol to the letter and avoid the possible pitfalls.
The Guaifenesin Protocol works for both Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Dr St. Amand has said that he's never seen a CFS patient at his clinic that didn't have similar lumps and bumps to those diagnosed with FMS and that they will all respond to the protocol and their maps will show clearing as they progress. My own diagnosis was originally CFS, I have the lumps, and I've been recovering steadily since I started on Guaifenesin.
Guaifenesin is a completely safe drug with no known interactions and no level of toxicity. There are no side effects, with the possible exception of slight nausea for some when starting out, though this usually passes within a few days. Rarely, some patients can have problems with the dye used to colour certain brands, but there are alternatives. Guaifenesin was originally an extract of the Guaiacum tree, but has been synthesised for decades. It is generic and not under patent to any single manufacturer. In the US it is considered so safe that is available over the counter for self medication, though its standard use is as a decongestant. It is purely a happy accident of chemistry that it has a similar chemical shape to whatever enzyme in which we are deficient and its effect on FMS sufferers is completely separate from its decongestant properties.
The protocol is not necessarily an easy road, but at all times it's an infinitely preferable road to the alternative, which is to continue with the relentless accumulating cycles of FMS and progressive bad health. The unusual thing about the protocol is that we are often going to have to feel worse as part of the process of working towards being well (though this is not true in all cases), which can seem contrary to our normal expectations of medical treatment. Nevertheless, it is this worsening of symptoms that confirms that the Guaifenesin is doing its job. In fact, there are many minor victories as we put up with the effects of cycling, and it's from these that we can derive some satisfaction, as well as confirming that we are heading in the right direction.
The current situation is that we will have to follow the protocol for life, because to stop would mean that we are no longer correcting our metabolic dysfunction and the accumulating cycles will start again. In the future, it is Dr St. Amand's hope that new drugs will be developed, that will work even better than Guaifenesin, or that whatever enzyme dysfunction that we all suffer from might be corrected in other ways. Using Guaifenesin, we can console ourselves with the fact that the difficulties come mostly through the initial reversal stage, as we clear out our accumulated phosphate and calcium deposits. After this, with our symptoms 'reversed out', then the Guaifenesin is simply maintaining us in a symptom-free state with no reversing effects.
In essence, there are only two or three things to remember with the Guaifenesin Protocol: to take enough Guaifenesin to make up an effective dose for us personally, to stay salicylate safe and to follow a hypoglycaemic diet if we are hypoglycaemic. Everything else is just details to make sure that we can do those things correctly. The standard causes of failure on the protocol are to not take enough Guaifenesin, to take too much, so that the patient can't cope with the cycling symptoms and gives up early, or blocking on salicylates There are sometimes comments that 'Guai didn't work for me', though, logically speaking, one could only say that if one had stuck accurately to the protocol for enough time to fully reverse out. There are also those who decide to bargain with the protocol and just follow the parts that they want. This will not work. The protocol has to be done as written. The current protocol is based on the failures and successes of all those patients of Dr St. Amand that have gone before over those four decades, who lost time on our behalf so that the team could discover what worked and what didn't. It is our fortune that we don't have to do this research for ourselves, but can simply follow the rules and know that they work.
Finally, on a personal level, your administration team have all been following the protocol for years and know that it works. All of us have tried the alternatives over our lives and found that either they didn't work or that any gains were eventually overcome by the relentless progression of the illness. Moreover, we have been fortunate to have followed the progress of countless hundreds of others around the globe. I've now read many millions of words of peoples' own accounts of their symptoms and their journeys towards wellness on Guaifenesin. There are many now that are fully reversed, and their stories are the most telling. For me, the evidence of the efficacy of the Guaifenesin Protocol is overwhelming, though it always sounded right, from when I first read about it in the autumn of 2001.
