Although there have been many books about landscape painting, the amat eur artist and student who may be confined to towns and cities has been less well provided for.  Here is a book which will inspire and encourage him to find new ideas and subjec matter in his urban environment.  The author gives advice on choosing a subject, ranging from the famous or pictureesque to the everyday street scene:on composition, perspective, figures intheir setting, the uses of photography, and the painting of interiors.  He describes the various painting techniques - oil,watercolour, gouche, pen and wash, pastels etc - anddiscusses the use of preliminary sketches for paintings; and there are step-by-step analyses of paintings done especially for the book.
